OTTER

We think you are an...

ESFP // ESTP

FUn, adventurous and full of energy

• Serious, literal, well-skilled and detail oriented.
• Happiest with a reliable schedule that doesn’t change frequently and the least amount of risk.
• Private, yet enjoy being a part of a broader community.
• They enjoy one-on-one time and thrive on goal setting, rules, direction, and preparation.

Kiddos with this type tend to be:

(in case you didn't read the big paragraph above)

13% of kiddos are otters

Buckle up! Welcome to the busy, playful, and rambunctious world of the Otter! It’s like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride raising this kiddo.

Otters are extroverts with an abundance of energy and a spark of pizzazz. Active and engaging socialization is essential as they live life hands-on and are always ready to party!

They are witty, outgoing, and confident in who they are — always ready for the spotlight and a chance to show off their talents. They are happiest when doing activities with other people, which helps them make friends easily.

Otter kiddos are truly curious about life and about experiencing it hands-on. They’d much rather be outside enjoying nature or playing sports than sitting in a classroom. They find it challenging to sit still because of their high energy and need for real-life experiences — exploration, observation, and talking through it. They’re always on the go and ready for an adventure. (Otters are the kiddos who give adults panic attacks because of their curiosity and willingness to take risks. Adults almost need to stay two steps ahead of them!)

Their world is carefree and spontaneous. Want to take an impromptu road trip? This kid is ready! Otters enjoy surprises and changing plans at the last minute. Since they live in the moment, they need constant re-direction and reminding of rules, boundaries, and expectations. If something sparks their curiosity, they don’t necessarily think of the implications or consequences of their actions. Their curiosity goes something like, “I wonder what it’s like to touch fire?” and then their hands immediately support that curiosity by saying something like, “I don’t know, but it sounds totally awesome! Let’s find out!”

Otter kiddos thrive when given a purpose, job, or responsibility that they care about and is theirs to own. They need adults who know how to channel their high energy without squashing their cheerful spirit. Their love for people and real-life experiences, mixed with their confidence, make a powerful combo that can significantly make the world a better (and more fun!) place.

EXTROVERTED

FLEXIBLE

DETAILS

These kiddos gain energy by engaging with outside stimuli: people, activities, conversation, etc. They prefer to go and do and need to talk out loud to process their thoughts. You can expect extroverted kiddos to enjoy playing and interacting with friends rather than being alone.

These kiddos focus in the present moment and don’t miss a beat when it comes to the details around them. They notice everything and depend on hands-on experience for learning rather than on what they read. They prefer precise step-by-step directions, literal words, stories, facts, and examples instead of vague ideas or metaphors.

Prefer spontaneity and a loosely held schedule because the unplanned and unexpected brings an abundance of joy and excitement. They enjoy having the ability to work, play, and have fun all at the same time. They are pressure-prompted and will get their best ideas at the last minute.

A LOOK Inside the OTTER's Brain

EXTROVERTED

DETAILS

FLEXIBLE

It’s good to know what ingredients make up your kiddo’s personality; however, it’s also helpful to understand how this plays out at home.

As Otters receive information into their brain, their primary focus is on the environmental details around them, which they experience through their senses. Nothing gets passed these kiddos; they notice everything and accurately remember facts, experiences, and data.

To understand this unique brain wiring, here’s an example: Otters have a sort of inborn surveillance system inside their brain that doesn’t seem to turn off while they’re awake. This system is highly sensitive to stimuli and is constantly scanning the environment to understand new sounds, sights, smells, and tastes. Their brain processes how these sensations feel inside and outside of their body. Because of this, they are easily distracted and tend to act impulsively because they want to satisfy their curiosity. They ask themselves questions like, “What is that?” or, “How does that work?” and then they immediately go figure it out. They will continue to ask questions until they fully understand it, all resources are exhausted, or something else distracts their attention. To them, it’s completely satisfying and thrilling to follow their impulses as they come.

They are so absorbed by what they sense in the outside world that they’re able to quickly assess cues from an adult’s tone of voice and body language to see how far they can push the limits to get their desired outcome. This is thrilling to them and can be exhausting to adults.

Because of their internal surveillance system, it may feel like Otters don’t have an off switch. They talk a lot and tend to interrupt. They tend to grab things they’re curious about or take physical risks without thinking about the implications. Otters will benefit significantly with patient adults who teach them self-control without squashing their curiosity and love for life. One parenting strategy that tends to be effective is the book Choice Theory by Dr. Glasser. Implementing this strategy will teach them how to take responsibility for their life and, at the same time, lessen how far they push the limits. Choice theory will help empower and build a positive relationship with your Otter rather than control them. They learn through doing and discovery, and they do not want to be controlled. These kiddos thrive with patient adults who know and love them well, and they will talk through everything. It would benefit Otters if adults stayed two steps ahead of them - recognizing when their curious appetite needs satisfying while keeping them safe.

An Otter has an abundance of energy that requires them to eat frequently. Otters don't have a blubber layer to keep warm or store energy for the future, so they have to eat 25% of their body mass every day just to survive!

Otter's LOVE to play. When not eating or hunting, they have been known to make slides along the banks of the water.

They are social animals and are usually never alone. Even when they nap in the water, they link arms so they don't drift away from each other. Totes adorbs right?!
